Coaching the must-have skill in the 21st Century

I started reading and came across different problems that we face today in our world.
I didn’t realise before reading all the articles and books how much we are in a transition period. A period where resilience and propulsion will be much needed. I immediately thought about how Coaching could be something that most compagnies, political parties, non profit organisations, communities etc. can benefit from in these neck-breaking times of change.

It isn’t possible for me to really detail out what challenges we will be facing in this email.
The only thing I can say is, that it is going to be huge and very complex as the changes are following at an extremely high speed. We hear VUCA – disruption and other new words that are part of our everyday vocabulary. How can we deal with all this?

What I believe is that Coaching can be used as a Force for Good in a world where Marketing, globalisation, climate, nature, technology are all escalating.

Let us use AI as one example of the challenge(s) that we will encounter.

I could go on and on but that’s not the most important message I want to give you.

My message to you is that the leaders of today have an extremely difficult task. They need to decide in the best interest of everyone without knowing what is going to happen tomorrow. The schools have to educate the children without knowing what tomorrow will need as skills in the new workplaces.

All this overload is hurting us, it is hurting our creativity. Creativity! The skill we will need the most tomorrow!!

Why am I talking about all this?

I talk about it, because “the changes in our society” is changing the kind of people we are becoming.

In “Understanding the effects of overload” p. 33 they picture the sort of people were becoming.

  • Frightened
  • Angry
  • Distracted
  • Bored
  • Intolerant
  • Impotent
  • Cynical
  • Opinionated
  • Informed (but now always helpfully)

Social Media has changed behaviour because they confer the authority to communicate without responsibility and often without identity.

Coaching has the power, the knowledge, the science to help humanity. Good educated coaches can help those who need to take decisions everyday, they can help people to detox from internet and social media. Coaching has the skills needed to stand tall in this new world. We can’t go back, we can’t stop the internet and AI to grow and take the place of millions of people. We can’t!!
What we can is to educate people. I really mean EDUCATE not INFORM!

Before ending this message to you I want to give you a quote from Stephen Hawking article “This is the most dangerous time for our planet”

For me, the really concerning aspect of this is that now, more than at any time in our history, our species needs to work together. We face awesome environmental challenges: climate change, food production, overpopulation, the decimation of other species, epidemic disease, Corona, acidification of the oceans.
Together, they are a reminder that we are at the most dangerous moment in the development of humanity. We now have the technology to destroy the planet on which we live, but have not yet developed the ability to escape it. Perhaps in a few hundred years, we will have established human colonies amid the stars, but right now we only have one planet, and we need to work together to protect it.
To do that, we need to break down, not build up, barriers within and between nations. If we are to stand a chance of doing that, the world’s leaders need to acknowledge that they have failed and are failing the many. With resources increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, we are going to have to learn to share far more than at present.
With not only jobs but entire industries disappearing, we must help people to retrain for a new world and support them financially while they do so. If communities and economies cannot cope with current levels of migration, we must do more to encourage global development, as that is the only way that the migratory millions will be persuaded to seek their future at home.
We can do this, I am an enormous optimist for my species; but it will require the elites, from London to Harvard, from Cambridge to Hollywood, to learn the lessons of the past year. To learn above all a measure of humility.
